The PL259 Curse - Fixed!
Have you got any of those annoying PL259 plugs that won't tighten up because they run out of thread on the SO239 socket? I finally lost patience with two good patch leads that I've had for a few years when I was testing some equipment in the shack. I needed a new patch lead and the plugs were simply too long and didn't fit anything...I tried. Just a quick video with a fix if you've got nothing to lose and they're destined for the bin anyway...

Thank you so much for making this video Ian. I just checked the box of 10 compression PL-259's that I purchased from M0mat a couple of years ago, and unfortunately they won't tighten up on my Hyendfed antenna that I planned to install this weekend. Fortunately, I haven't soldered them to the coax yet. They do fit my rig and other accessories, though. Hopefully, my neighbour will be able to help me by using his lathe. Been there done that too, but why??? Why should we have to resort to this butchery when a PL259 should be a PL259 should be a PL259, at least the critical dimensional features. Another PIA is the thread pitch on some of the sockets I've come across being slightly finer whereby the plug wont screw on fully because of a different thread pitch/ form. Why would anyone want to pay for a 358 cm of coax for the choke balun or a ferrite toroid with added coax when they could use 263 cm of cheaper wire for the radiating sleeve? 2. Nice video. I have one question/concern about the design, though.... Would it be more appropriate to switch the order of the two cores so that the 1:1 current balun (choke) is attached at the antenna side of the pair to convert the 200-ohm BALanced load to 200-ohm UNbalanced, then with the second core, transform the 200-ohm UNbalanced to 50-ohm UNbalanced? (So that the order is 1:1 BALUN to 4:1 UNUN with the antenna side being 200-ohm BALanced and the transceiver side being 50-ohm UNbalanced.) The way it is presented, as I understand it, in the video, the 4:1 UNUN is being used on the BALanced side of the circuit rather than the UNbalanced side of the circuit. This doesn't seem quite right to me, but maybe you have a good reason for it that I am not seeing?

You could possibly reverse them as you suggest I suspect, but then the 1:1 would need to be designed for 200Ohm? This version copies the 1:1 50Ohm I’ve successfully used on my 80m dipole. After some years of use I can confirm that it performs really well and is my go-to main antenna 👍🏻 Thanks for commenting 😀

Thanx for video Ian. Made exactly the same loop and hunting for very annoying qrm in my hood. To disguise the loop I used tennis racket sleeve which fits perfectly. Placed a little receiver and antenna into the backpack and off I go. Riding a bike around the neighborhood and found a house in front of which my receiver went nuts. Next step is trying to talk to the owner. Thank again and 73 de Mirza K9IG.
